about

Mine eyes wax heavy and ye day growes old.
The dew falls thick, my beloved growes cold.
Draw, draw ye closed curtaynes: and make room:
My dear, my dearest dust; I come, I come.

From 'My Dearest Dust' by Lady Catherine Dyer, 1641

Piece of Mind is a record about the fear of memory loss. Memory loss is something I have been afraid of since I was a child - the idea that some day I won't be able to remember places, events, even people. This album is about my struggle with reconciling the fact that I could some day lose pieces of my mind.

Anders Johanson - Piano, sound design
Caleb Baer - Strings

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Anders Johanson

Artwork by Antonio Marynoff

This album was created with a blend of acoustic recordings and software instruments. The primary piano on this album is Postcard Piano by Teletone Audio, who are just the absolute loves of my life.

Solo strings were written/demoed using Alternative Solo Strings by Spitfire Audio, then recorded live using an AKG C414 in hypercardioid as the close mic and a MXL 990 mic capturing the room.

Sound design elements were a combination of many sound sources and plugins, most notably ++bubbler by SoundHack and SoundToys Effects Rack. Scarbo by Teletone Audio played a major role on this album and Helenko by Felt Instruments. Ciemno by Felt Instruments also makes a few appearances throughout.

The synthesizer pads on this album were mostly the Detuned 60 preset from Olafur Arnalds' Composer Toolkit by Spitfire Audio, with appearances from my own custom instrument library and a few basic Serum patches. Orchestra tracks on this album, usually acting as pads, are Olafur Arnalds Chamber Orchestra and London Contemporary Orchestra Textures, both by Spitfire Audio.

Drum and percussion sounds were a mix of Roland 808 samples and Superior Drummer 2 by Toontrack.

Every sub bass on this album came from a Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition, which also contributed some doubling on a few piano melodies and background synth parts.

Cassette sounds on this album came from a mix of real cassette machines, primarily a Sony M-570V microcassette recorder, and processing through a plugin called Cassette by Waves Factory.

Field recordings on the album were all captured using a Zoom H1n and its built-in microphone.

Strings were tracked on a 2017 MacBook Pro running Logic Pro X, and the album was mixed and mastered on a custom built PC running Cubase 10. Aside from Ozone 9 Elements for mastering and Valhalla Room Reverb, all plugins used for mixing this album were stock Cubase plugins.
